They brought us out some bread to start and it was everything bread should be - crusty on the outside, light and soft on the inside with a perfect yeasty flavour.
For our meals my mom and sister each ordered a salad and split a pizza. I managed to snap pictures of their salads, but not their pizza, as they dug into it too quickly! Hayley got a salad with tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, basil and balsamic vinegar, which she said was good, but the tomatoes weren't quite ripe. I guess you can't really expect good tomatoes in the middle of winter!
Mom got the Insalata di Fabbrica with romaine hearts, pancetta, toasted foccacia, and garlic anchovy dressing. She loved the dressing and pancetta, but the lettuce in her salad was brown at the edges, which you wouldn't expect at a nice restaurant.
As for their pizza, they enjoyed the flavours, but said that it was kind of "wimpy" because the crust was saggy.
Since I had just enjoyed a glorious pizza on Friday night, I decided to get something different and ordered the wood oven roasted chicken salad with mixed greens, tomato, avocado, pancetta, gorgonzola, chopped egg, and toasted foccacia. I really enjoyed this! It was like a Cobb salad but even better. Also I loved how it came on a wooden board.
Overall it was an okay meal, but the quality didn't really live up to our expectations. The atmosphere and service, however, were fabulous!
Have you ever been to a celebrity chef's restaurant (or a popular restaurant with lots of hype)? What did you think?

Aww I'm sorry it wasn't quite what you were expecting (although I think it's really cool that your salad came on a board haha). Anytime we go to Charleston, Joe researches the top restaurants and we go. We have yet to be disappointed there thankfully :) The only restaurant I've been disappointed in recently was this place about five minutes from me. It replaced a restaurant that we really liked, but we were willing to give it a try. The food was expensive, tasted ok but not worth the price, service was super slow, and the atmosphere was really loud and made it hard to hear. I'd go back to check out the lunch menu but that's it. And I wish they hadn't moved the other one, since I really liked it haha
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of a salad on a cutting board! How did the interview go? sometimes I feel like the "famous" restaurants just don't live up to their popularity and name. I love little family owned restaurants more.
ReplyDeletesuch a bummer when a restaurant disappoint!
ReplyDeleteThat salad looks amazing! I'm sorry the rest of your visit turned out disappointing though! It's always tough when something is so hyped up and it doesn't live up to the expectation!
ReplyDeleteMark McEwan, I'm so disappointed in you! That is seriously a bummer. Your salad did look fantastic though - especially those huge avocado chunks.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever been to a celebrity's restaurant...but going to one of David Chang's restaurants would be on my list of things to accomplish.
It is always so disappointing when restaurants disappoint you and do not live up to your expectations (even if they aren't THAT high). Brown lettuce in a salad is just NOT cool! Hopefully your next restaurant experience will be much better!
ReplyDeleteso cool it is served like that. i am a firm believer we eat with our eyes first!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great place!
ReplyDeleteAh I hate when the food doesn't measure up, especially when I go in with high expectations...although fortunately the service & atmosphere made up for it :)! Love the look of your salad- top marks for presentation and flavor! I went to one of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants in London but don't remember loving it at all- especially given his celebrity status, I expected a bit more...eh you win some, you lose some!
ReplyDeleteI try not to get too excited when I go to a place with lots of hype because I don't want to be disappointed. I'm a hard core foodie and pretty harsh with my criticisms, so I'll be sure to tell the truth regardless! That buffala mozzarella looks to die for :-)
ReplyDeleteI heard Toronto is vegan friendly! Would love to jet to there!

Awe, too bad it wasn't quite what you were expecting. Especially with that saggy crust. That doesn't sound all too pleasant ha.
ReplyDeleteI've been to a few restaurants that haven't lived up to the hype, but now I can't really remember what they were. Clearly I'm observant.
I have never heard of adzuki beans before. Sorry the restaurant wasn't what you were hoping for. I am always so disappointed when I go someplace thinking it's going to be really good and it ends up less than steller.
