Happy New Year!
I hope you had fun ringing in 2013 last night. I'm not much of a party animal, so I kept it low key and just ordered in sushi and had a Gilmore Girls marathon with my sister. I got to spend it with one of my best friends, so I couldn't have asked for anything better.
Today I know a lot of people are taking some time to make some goals and resolutions for the upcoming year. But I'm doing something a little different. Instead of resolutions I've made a 'kitchen bucket list' of some of the cooking techniques and dishes I want to work on this year. I want to become a better cook, and I know to do that I need to get outside my comfort zone and challenge myself! So here it is:
My kitchen bucket list
1. Cook a whole fish
2. Make my own pie crust
3. Cook fresh lobster
4. Make boeuf bourguignon
5. Poach an egg
6. Make pita bread
7. Make homemade gnocchi
8. Make almond butter
9. Homemade pizza dough
10. Cook chicken legs/thighs
11. Make a bechamel sauce
12. Break down a chicken
13. Make my own stock
14. Make a really good beef burger
15. Make crepes
16. Learn to beat egg whites properly
17. Make a braised meat dish
18. Homemade BBQ sauce
19. Make perfect whole wheat pancakes
20. Make a good meatloaf
21. Make homemade bolognese sauce.
This list isn't exhaustive and I may add to it throughout the year as I come up with more ideas. I'm excited for 2013 to be my best year in the kitchen ever!

What is on your kitchen bucket list?

This is awesome Chelsea! I love the idea of having a kitchen bucket list - there's definitely things in the kitchen that I've been avoiding because it pushes my comfort level a bit.
ReplyDeleteTo steal some from you, I'd love to learn how to poach an egg, make gnocchi, make homemade stock, and break down a chicken. I also want to learn how to cook the perfect med-rare steak, cook game (I love venison but never attempted it at home) and bake a two-teared cake.
my kitchen bucket list is to be on your kitchen bucket list and try everything you make because you're amazing!! haha
ReplyDeleteGreat list :) I want to make a souflee!
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea!! I just told my bf he should do this, too, since he loves to cook and wants to try some crazy (to me anyway haha) stuff this year! I can't wait to see how this turns out for you :) And I would love to make a homemade pie crust at some point this year!
ReplyDeleteand I loveeeeee that you spent your NYE watching Gilmore Girls with your sister...my mum and I watched the entire series together and still like to watch them when they're on :)
DeleteLove this! One of the things I want to work on in 2013 is to push myself out of my comfort zone, and the kitchen is a great place to do that too. There are waaaay too many things that I'd love to try but have been too intimidated by in the past. Baking yeast bread, making cinnamon buns, poaching eggs, roasting a whole chicken, making my own wraps, finding the perfect cookie recipe, baking a layered cake from scratch... Thanks for the inspiration, girlie :) Can't wait to see the things you come up with this year!
ReplyDeleteman those are some good ideas. I definitely want to make crepes and almond butter!
ReplyDeleteLOOOOOVE this idea of a kitchen bucket list! What a fun way to challenge yourself and learn new things! As a little side note: my mom makes boeuf bourguignon in the world and she uses the Barefoot Contessa recipe. I highly, highly recommend it. ;)
ReplyDeleteeeeeeee I can't wait to follow along as you try all these! you'll be like 198498938498098 times more legit this time next year as you are now, if that's even possible. Glad you had a good NYE - I went out to a really nice dinner w/ my parents but afterward my mom and I just watched Downton Abby all night so CHEERS for chillin :-D
ReplyDeletei really really enjoy this, it is so catered to who you are. I am pretty excited about seeing you accomplish these (as you can see I have no doubt you will!)
ReplyDeletePhew Chelsea you have quite the list! Breaking down a chicken seems like it will be a challenge but so rewarding once you serve it lol
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a kitchen bucket list but aim to spend more time in the kitchen and cooking from scratch and gardening more.
Love this! You've never poached an egg!?
ReplyDeleteCook a whole fish is top of my list too!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of creating a kitchen bucket list. It makes cooking a whole new challenge, even for things you've done a million times (like trying to make the perfect pancake). I wish you the best of luck!
ReplyDeleteAlso, you should definitely make homemade almond butter and homemade pie crust priorities. They're both delicious and rewarding!
How fun! We learned a couple of these things in one of my classes (beating eggs and making pie crust) I am excited for your posts on these things because I know you will have so much fun with them!
ReplyDeleteAhh this is awesome! I can't wait to see all the fun adventures you're gonna have while conquering this list!
ReplyDeletePs--making your own almond butter is SO FUN :D
Oooooh I love this!!!
ReplyDeleteoh, gilmore girls. J'ADORE. <3 sounds like the perfect night to me! xo
ReplyDeleteI'm the worst (laziest?) cook ever (I blame it on not having a dish washer!)
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky I live in NYC and have delicious healthy food at my fingertips
omigod I love this! Can I come cook with you?! :-P
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, I need to start a kitchen bucket list, I've never even thought about that before :-) I can't wait to hear about your cooking adventures this year.
You can bet I love this! :)
ReplyDeletelets see, some things on my kitchen bucket list are: use dry beans instead of canned, make my own almond milk yogurt, and make my own vegetable stock. i just did the last one though! definitely came out different than store bought broth, but hopefully i can tweak it in the future :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Good meatloaf and braised meat...definitely two things on my list as well! Along with making my own sushi and homemade pasta! I'm happy to say that I have successfully poached an egg, and made almond butter, almond milk, béchamel, and my own stock...a lot of those things I never even attempted or even THOUGHT I'd attempt before I started blogging. But the fresh lobster thing? Yeah, I'm a weenie...I'll just crouch in the corner of the kitchen and watch you do it, mmkay?
